Fort in the Wood,
Lancashire's Lost Roman Fort

Bluestone Archaeology is pleased to announce that we have set up a new website and crowdfunding page for our new summer field school excavation which is planned to take place in the Summer of 2020. if funded (and depending on Covid-19 restrictions).

'This newly discovered archaeological site is one of the most significant Roman discoveries made in Lancashire for over 100 years.

Until now there has been very little evidence of the Roman military occupation of the South-West Lancashire coastal plain other than the road network and the forts at Kirkham, Lancaster, Ribchester and Wigan. The 'Fort in the Wood' fills a large gap in our knowledge of the Roman military occupation of lowland NW England, and focuses attention onto the settlement and administration of the region, an area that as long been seen as sparsely settled during the Roman period.'
